Posts: 35 01/22/09 14:59:34	Tags : None Of course our first topic in 19th Century Scientists section has to be about Charles Darwin as we celebrate 200 years since his birth. Many museums are running special exhibitions to mark the event, and it also happens that this year is the 150th anniversary of the publication of 'On the Origin of Species.' Last year there was a special show at the New York Botanical Gardens about it, but I couldn't go unfortunately. Has anyone been to or planning to go to any events? Apparently the culmination of events will be in November of this year (the month of the publication of his famous book). Be sure to add upcoming events in the events part of the forum!

Posts: 22 01/24/09 04:39:55	Here in the UK, we're going nuts with the celebration and I have found out about hundreds of events. I was on the London Underground last week and saw an advert for a Darwin exhibition in the Natural History Museum in London. I hope to go and have a look round within the next couple of weeks, so I will be sure to report back on it for everyone. Just to give you an idea of how many events are happening, there's a special website for people in the UK at http://www.darwin200.org/ There's 24 events just in January! Quite a few of them focus on dinosaurs in particular. Are you going to go to the Martinsville event, Radiation Theater?

Posts: 35 01/24/09 12:53:24	I had a look at that website - there's loads of stuff going on! I'll have to see if there's a similar site for the US. I had a look at the American Museum of Natural History website and they don't seem to have anything planned, which is a shame. Having said that, they did have a Darwin exhibition a few years ago, so maybe they just don't want to repeat themselves. Thinking about it, I think the same exhibition went to Toronto in Ontario last year - it may have then moved to London, knight742. In which case, I've missed that one and you'll have to fill us in on it!

I think you might be right about it being the same exhibition as I saw an advert for it this week and it said it was in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science in Boston, the Field Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum. A quick internet search has revealed that this is true - the NHM in London is the last of the tour dates for the same exhibit. Interestingly, Google is flagging up malware warnings for all the above websites, so I guess someone who has issues with evolution has messed up Google's warning systems. Personally I think people who try and undermine people's arguments in such an insidious way are just socially backward and incapable of interacting in real life. Mind you I think that about all people who sit at home and create viruses and whatnot. Open, reasoned debate is always the best answer! Of course, it is understandable that people would want to avoid having arguments with me (Strong-willed is putting it lightly) Later!

Charles Darwin was born in 1809 and studied many different species while on his famous trip aboard the HMS Beagle prior to publishing 'On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection' This piece of work set out Darwin's principles for how life developed on Earth through natural selection (survival of the fittest.) The original theory behind the book was also developed independently by Alfred George Wallace. The theory of evolution received mixed responses from the scientific community, and following this, drove a wedge between religion and science…
